Only 30 minutes' drive from Estepona on the N340 (A7) or AP7, Puerto Banus takes
its name from José Banús,
a local property developer. Built in 1970, it was intended as a luxury
marina and shopping district for the super-rich, with the focal point being the marina itself. Today it
still exudes a distinct 'jet set' atmosphere; with a very 'Miami meets the Med' feel to it. In 2004, three-ton
statue of a rhinoceros created by Dali in 1956 was placed the middle of a roundabout at the entrance to Banus. Officially known as Rinoceronte
Vestido con Puntillas, it’s now a local landmark.
The marina itself is home to over 900 boats, including those of some of the world's wealthiest people (such as the
King of Saudi Arabia). Lined with designer stores, upmarket bars, world-class restaurants and clubs,
and flanked
by beaches, it is also overlooked by
the impressive La Concha Mountain, one of the landmarks of the area. Better beaches are found elsewhere along the coast,
but for decadent shopping, the sheer luxury of some of the exclusive Beach Clubs, superb
restaurants and
a truly
vibrant atmosphere, this is the place to be, and to be seen. Many of the rich and famous still frequent Puerto Banus - as do the paparazzi!
The small but useful and friendly tourist office is a useful first stop. There they will inform you of the best local
attractions and is also where you can find information on many of the excursions and days out available from Banus. Look out for the free discount vouchers, as Puerto Banus is not cheap!
