Marbella is one of Europe's favourite travel destinations. What was once a small fishing village overlooked by the
impressive
Sierra Blanca is now one of the most cosmopolitan beach resorts on the Costa del Sol
and a glossy
resort town.
With a history dating back to 1600 BC there are pieces of the past waiting to be discovered
in every corner of the old town, with the Moorish castle and famous Plaza
de los Naranjos (which is also where the tourist office is situated). The flower
filled balconies and narrow
side streets make you feel like you are stepping back in time. You will also see remnants of the Muslim period with remains of the city walls
along streets such as Calle
Portada and Calle
Arte. Mostly pedestrianized, the old town is a pleasant place to stroll around, taking in sights such as the Iglesia
dela Encarncion,
and the Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo (which includes works by Picasso, Miro and Dali in its collection).
Look out for the fascinating Museo Bonsai, dedicated to the ancient Japanese miniature tree art. You can also catch a boat ride from here to nearby Puerto
Banus, leaving from Puerto Deportivo (the marina in Marbella).
The famous Golden Mile features many attractions, including the Marbella Beach Cluband the late King Fahad's palace.
