Marbella is one of Europe's favourite travel destinations. What was once a small fishing village overlooked by the impressive Sierra Blanca is now one of the most cosmopolitan beach locations on the Costa del Sol and a glamorous resort town.
With a history dating back to 1600 BC, reminders of the past can be discovered in every corner of the old town - such as the Moorish castle and famous Plaza de los Naranjos (where the tourist office is situated). The flower filled balconies and narrow side streets give you the feeling of stepping back in time. You will also find remnants of the Muslim period including the old city walls along streets such as Calle Portada and Calle Arte. Mostly pedestrianized, the old town is a pleasant place to explore and take in sights such as the Iglesia dela Encarncion, and the Museo del Grabado Espanol Contemporaneo (featuring works by Picasso, Miro and Dali in its collection).
Look out for the fascinating Museo Bonsai, dedicated to the ancient Japanese miniature tree art. You can also catch a boat ride from here to nearby Puerto Banus, leaving from Puerto Deportivo (the marina in Marbella).
The famous Golden Mile features many attractions, including the Marbella Beach Club and the late King Fahad's palace.
